White Christmas in Big Bear, California: Cozy Cabin Rentals and Winter Magic

If you're like me and grew up with snowy Christmases, moving to the warm Mojave Desert in California can be quite the change—especially during the holiday season. But don't worry, I've found the perfect way to bring that magical white Christmas back into your life!

In 2022, when Jake and I were living in the Mojave Desert, we decided to do something extra special for Christmas that didn't involve the desert's warm, dry air. That's when we discovered Big Bear, a hidden gem nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains outside LA. Not only does it snow there in the winter, but there's even a small German community with authentic food and drinks—something that made me, as a German, incredibly excited! But I'll save that story for another time. Today, it's all about Big Bear as the ultimate white Christmas escape.

A Magical Winter Getaway in Big Bear

We rented a cozy cabin with a fireplace and kitchen for a few days, excited for a festive winter retreat. When we left our desert home, the temperature was a toasty 19°C (66°F), but the air rapidly cooled as we headed into the mountains. By the time we arrived, it was raining—but still no snow. We crossed our fingers for a Christmas miracle.

On Christmas morning, we woke up to a full-on winter wonderland! The town was blanketed in snow, turning a rainy Christmas Eve into one of the most magical, picturesque holiday moments I've ever experienced. For someone living in the desert heat, waking up to a snowy Christmas was simply unforgettable.
