Three Unforgettable Camping Experiences in California: Epic Desert Sunsets, Giant Sequoias, and Glamping at Joshua Tree!

Let's talk about camping in California! California has it all whether you're a die-hard outdoor enthusiast or prefer a little luxury with your wilderness experience. From the wild beauty of the Mojave Desert to glamping at Joshua Tree, this state is packed with spots that make you want to pitch a tent and stay for a wile.

In this post, we are sharing three unforgettable camping experiences—from the wild serenity of Whole-In-The-Wall Campground to cozy riverside camping in Sequoia National Park, and finally, a luxe glamping adventure in Joshua Tree. Jake and I have explored all these places, and each one offers something special. Whether you're after starry skies, sequoia giants, or a little glam under the desert sun, you'll find your perfect camping escape right here. Let's get into it!

1. Whole-In-The-Wall Campground, Mojave Desert

Bare-bones Tent Camping, Maximum Desert Vibes

If you’re looking for a raw, simple desert camping experience, Whole-in-the-wall campground in the Mojave Desert is exactly what you need. Here, it’s just you, the rocky desert landscape, and some of the most stunning sunsets you’ll ever see.

The amenities are minimal: pit toilets, trash cans, fire rings, and picnic tables. There are no utility hookups, no running water, and firewood isn’t available in the park, so be sure to bring your own. But that simplicity is what makes it special. The campground is based on a first-come, first-served, and at just $12 a night, you’ll get a designated campsite complete with a fire pit, perfect for cozy campfires under a sky bursting with stars.

The scenery here is breathtaking, especially when the sun sets in shades of pink and purple, painting the rocky Mojave terrain. There’s not much to explore immediately around the campground, but for desert lovers, it’s a peaceful escape. There are two loop trails: Rings Loop Trail (a 1-mile round-trip that lets you scramble through rock formations) and Barber Peak Loop Trail (6 miles of stunning desert views).

Heads-up: The park ranger comes by once a day to collect the camping fee. It’s cash-only, so make sure you have small bills and drop them in the box.

2. Potwishwa Campsite - Sequoia Nationalpark

Tent Camping in the National Park

For an outdoor camping experience in a national park, Potwisha Campground in Sequoia National Park is a great spot. You won’t find cell phone service, showers, or camp stores here, but the beauty of this place is in its simplicity and connection to nature. Trust me, there’s nothing quite like being surrounded by fresh forest air and the sound of a nearby river to make you feel grounded.

Before you head out, make sure to grab everything you’ll need for your stay—there’s a small store (village market) at the bottom of the mountain near the lake, but it’s better to come fully prepared. Bring firewood, food, and your favorite camping treats because once you’re at Potwisha, you’ll want to settle in. Your designated campsite comes with a fire pit, picnic table, and a bear box for food storage. Toilets are available, but don’t expect any showers!

The campsite itself is serene, with a river running nearby, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. To see the famous sequoia trees, you’ll need to drive further up the mountain (approx. 30 minutes), where the temperatures are slightly cooler, but it’s absolutely worth it. Sequoia National Park is a bucket-list destination, and Potwisha is a great home base to explore.

Cost: $32 per night for the campsite, plus $35 for the national park entry fee (per vehicle).

3. Glamping in Joshua Tree National Park

Full Amenities, Glamping Vibes

If you're looking for a bit of luxury with your camping, glamping in Joshua Tree is where it's at. Around the national park, you'll find plenty of cool Airbnb options, and we once stayed in a dreamy boho-style tent that felt like the perfect blend of nature and comfort. Picture this: an outdoor shower where you can stargaze while enjoying a hot soak, a firepit for those cozy nights, and a tent equipped with a heater to keep things warm and toasty.

The glamping tent even had a real bed inside, so we could enjoy the outdoors without giving up any of the comforts. Jake, my brother, and I came here to celebrate my brother's PhD, and it was perfect! We grilled our food over the fire, sipped drinks, and watched one of the Joshua Tree area's signature pink sunsets. It was the perfect way to enjoy nature with a touch of indulgence.

The specific Airbnb we stayed in no longer exists, but I found another one with a similar vibe: Electric Yurt with Cowboy Pool. You get the same glamorous desert experience with access to all of Joshua Tree's wonders.

If you're up for a unique outdoor getaway, this is the spot!

Summary

Whether you want a raw outdoor experience in the Mojave Desert, camp by a river in the Sequoia National Park, or indulge in a bit more of glamping under the stars experience at Joshua Tree, California offers the perfect camping experience.
